Hair Regimen Building: Types & Use's of Shampoo’s…

If you’re not on a healthy hair journey you may probably see the title and say “ Shampoo’s, what’s the big deal? I just need a product to cleanse my scalp”. There are different Shampoo’s that serve different purposes for our hair, let me break it down.

Types of Shampoo’s for Healthy Hair Care:
[1]   Clarifying Shampoo
[2]   Moisturizing Shampoo
[3]   Chelating Shampoo

Clarifying Shampoo's
Types of Clarifying Shampoo's

This type of shampoo cleans your scalp to remove all dirt, product build up and excess oil, which leaves your hair squeaky clean.  Most clarifying shampoos leaves your hair dry and it’s important to follow up with a great moisturizing deep conditioner, to moisturize and soften your hair.
Product build up can be caused from deposits left on your hair from hair sprays, gel or mousse. This shampoo can be used once a month or more or less depending on the amount of product you are using on your hair daily or weekly.  Since clarifying shampoos dry out your hair you can opt to pre-poo (pre- shampoo treatment) with an oil or conditioner to prepare your hair for the harsh shampoo you are about to wash your hair with.
I personally prefer to use Extra Virgin Coconut oil to pre-poo first and my hair isn’t as dried out when a use a conditioner. Don’t be mad that it dries out your hair, because it’s simply doing its job of giving your hair a very good clean, just follow up with a good deep conditioner and you will be fine.
Some of the ingredients found in Clarifying Shampoo's are:sodium lauryl and laureth sulfate, cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium citrate, sodium benzoate, sodium chloride, Benzyl Alcohol, Limonene, Linalool, Propylene Glycol.

Moisturizing Shampoo's
Types of Moisturizing Shampoo's
As the name suggest, this shampoo keeps your hair moisturized and clean but not as squeaky clean as the clarifying shampoo.  Not all products that claims to be moisturizing are really moisturizing. The marketing team at these hair care companies knows exactly what to place and where to place certain key things on their product to attract us the consumers. Don’t fall for the gimmicks.
You can identify a moisturizing shampoo when you see on the label “moisturizing shampoo” or “conditioning shampoo” but as I said earlier because it says that does mean it does what it say it will do, instead look at the ingredients to determine if its moisturizing or not.
It would be ideal to find a moisturizing shampoo without sulfates but not all sulfates are bad. A product that has one sulfate such as Laureth sulfates, tricedeth or sodium myreth are not as harsh as the other sulfates found in a clarifying shampoo like ammonium lauryl sulfate, ammonium laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate.
Take a look at what Moisturizing Shampoo's should contain: Water, Jojoba oil, Coconut oil, Glycerin, Aloe Vera, Advocado Oil, Castor Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Olive Oil, Shea Butter.   This shampoo can be used weekly of bi-weekly.

Chelating Shampoo's
Types of Chelating Shampoo
This type of shampoo removes heavy product buildup which can be derived from hard water minerals, swimming in pools and ocean/sea. Deposits or toxins left on the hair can be caused by minerals from hard water (calcium or limestone), chlorine or salt water from swimming.  After a while, these deposits will cause buildup which leaves your hair dry, flat and limp.  This shampoo really helps out those who swim frequently to remove all toxins left in the hair. After using this shampoo make sure to follow up with a great moisturizing deep conditioner, since this shampoo strips your hair. Depending on your lifestyle, you may use as seen fit, but once a month is fine.
Some of the ingredients found in a Chelating Shampoo's are: Disodium EDTA, Tetrasodium EDTA, Sodium Citrate, Citric Acid or Phytic Acid

    1. Laureth isn't as harsh as Lauryl sulfate. The purpose of a shampoo is to clean and sulfates are cleaning agents. But it all comes down to your preference if your prefer sulfates or not.

  3. I definitely have to get a chelating shampoo for this summer, if I plan on going to the beach more often and swimming. I already have moisturising covered. ?What do you think of the ORS HaiRepair line? Have you tried that shampoo? I feel as though it's clarifying and moisturising at the same time, if that's possible.
