Travel | My Experience on LIAT Airlines…

I saw Liat Airlines offering a special to various Caribbean destinations and I asked my husband if we should jump on that opportunity to see a Caribbean island for our honeymoon and we did. We have been so blessed to travel to America, Canada and Europe together, so a trip to the Caribbean was due. I will not lie if I didn't say, I was nervous about flying on such a small aircraft, the horror stories of not making it to your destination on time, lost of baggage and you name it. There is an acronym for Liat which is, Leave Island Any Time. I have heard so many bad stories that I was prepared to have an extra day as a buffer just in-case no flights were available for the day we wanted to return. Let’s just say that wasn't a necessity.

My flight experience on Liat Airlines

Our flight was 5:50pm, so it would have been convenient to go straight from work and make it on-time since I knew I could get there before the check in period was cut off. I remember talking to my bestie on that day and she saying “good luck with leaving on-time, I’ll look out for your message saying you’re still at the airport”, I just chuckled. On arriving at the airport we saw Liat airplanes lined up and my husband said to me “ babe our flight is here”. Since we had no luggage to check in, it was easy breezy checking in. When we asked the customer service rep checking us in, if the flight was on time she said very sternly “yes”.  We chuckled and went with the flow. Service so far was great.

The gate where the airline is situated, we had never been before which was a lot further than the other airlines, in terms of walking distance.  Guess what? Our flight was called on-time, yes you read right ONTIME. We boarded the flight and the aircraft was a lot bigger than I anticipated. It reminded me of the time I traveled on West Jet.  The flight attendants were very friendly and accommodating. We took off on-time and before I could relax it was time to land the aircraft. Since we didn't have any luggage checked in, it was easy to get off the flight and head to our hotel.

After having such a wonderful time it was time to get back to reality and head back to Barbados. We got to the airport on time and our flight was scheduled to leave ontime. We were so shocked and excited all in one breathe. My husband’s only issue was the customer service rep checking us in, insisted on us checking in our carry on’s even though these were the same luggage we didn't need to check in when we left Barbados. We didn't buy anything on our trip except for souvenirs, so we were extremely confused. She then explained that due to the weight of the carry on’s and to even out the weight on the plane, that’s why she’s enforcing we check in the bags. If it means securing our safety we were fine in checking in the bags.
On board Liat Airlines
We headed into the departure lounge and sat until our flight was called. When our flight was announced, we headed out to the tarmac but could board the flight. Our flight didn't leave on-time as promised. Before you start getting disappointed, let me explain.  Actually a passenger from the previous flight got sick and the flight attendants were waiting on the ambulance to pick her up before allowing us to board the flight. Again the flight was on-time but due to circumstances outside of Liat's control the flight left late but not super late either. The flight departed 30-45mins later than the original time given but we weren't upset at all but happy to be heading home.

Our flight experience with time was great except for the hiccup from returning. Flight attendant’s were friendly. The actual flight was really good. Landing was okay as well. Will I travel on Liat again, definitely. I can’t make any promises if you don’t have the same experience we had on Liat Airlines, but you can give them a try. This taught me that sometimes you just need to try out things for yourself and not rely on other opinions solely. Give yourself a round of applause Liat Airlines for exceeding our expectations.

Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored post. Our flights were purchased with our own money.

What’s the best airline you have ever traveled on?

Be inspired…

  1. Amarican Airlines lost our luggage when we went to Jamaica. We did not get them back until after we came back from the trip. I don't trust any of them. I'm glad you had a good experience.

  3. That's great to hear! It is the worst when you travel on a horrible airline because it makes the experience of traveling less exciting.

    I love Delta.

  5. Our national airline - Air Namibia - has so far always given me the best flying experiences. They are followed by British Airways.

Tomi, I nominate you for a Liebster Award on my blog, check it out.

  6. Great that you had a perfect time, but I can't help thinking this is expected. Is it so rare nowadays that flights and train are on time that people think it is extra good service if they are? I always expect my flights to be on time.

    1. I agree Lisa, that's the type of service we should be getting generally, but this particular airline has extremely bad reviews, that's why i was pleasantly surprise with my experience.

  8. Sounds like a great experience. I don't have a favorite airline per say but I do like it when they make the trip smoother and easier. If I had to chose one I would say Southwest is my favorite, it's always so easy to travel with the kids and I love that I can buy my ticket without worrying about the price drop or the luggage fees.
